With the summer holidays fast approaching, it’s important to encourage our kids to exercise. Screentime is on the rise and although it can be an easier alternative to keep them occupied we have to question is it the healthiest option? After school and socialising was taken online during the pandemic it’s essential that we encourage our kids to exercise regularly but how do we make this a fun activity?
Children need on average 60 minutes of moderate exercise at least 5 days per week in order to stay healthy. This can be broken up into chunks to make the task seem manageable. To help, we’re offering children’s fitness classes in Cheltenham so you can enjoy your workout knowing your child is safe, happy and healthy.
Here are 5 ways to get your kids moving this summer:
1. Create a challenge or purpose when going for a walk.
Unlike most adults who enjoy taking some time to decompress whilst walking, children often find walking boring. An easy way to encourage them to walk would be by putting on a scavenger hunt, taking a neighbour’s dog for a walk or carrying out a colour walk – A colour walk is where you follow a certain colour and that colour is the route you take.
2. Encouragement through tech.
Children’s fitness can be encouraged through the use of an Apple Watch or Fitbit. These watches create a daily challenge for children and even allow them to compete with their friends. These fitness trackers can be found at a variety of price points and will do the nudging for you. Most smartwatches remind you when it’s time to get up and move around which is one less thing we as parents have to think about.
3. Find a sport they love.
Sports are great to not only create a structure to your week but to encourage exercise without being boring. Sports build friendships and skills all whilst encouraging commitment giving your child a sense of purpose. There are plenty of Children’s fitness and sports classes in Cheltenham and the surrounding areas, why not try one of our children’s classes?
4. Recognise dancing as exercise.
Children’s fitness can come from dance breaks in the kitchen, playing on just dance or attending a school disco. This fun exercise idea contributes to their 60 minutes per day without them even knowing. Dancing helps with coordination, rhythm and confidence so why not give it a go – you might enjoy a dance break too.
5. Create a daily indoor activity.
Being UK based, the weather is often unpredictable. It’s important to have some fun activities such as fort building, indoor assault courses or charades on hand to make indoor exercise enjoyable. These bursts of activity will help take their eyes off the screen and clock up those all-important active minutes.
It’s important to make fun the main focus of all activities for children with competition coming a close second. These focuses will make children’s fitness a success and will leave them wanting more.
Here at GL52, we understand that we as parents are time poor so fitting in exercise and stimulating the kids can be challenging. To enable that all-important time for yourself, we have a number of children’s fitness classes which will be running throughout the summer to ensure your child has fun whilst exercising.
